From Church PLanting to Writing Music

a story of God doing a new thing... Twice.

Mill City Church was planted in West Columbia, SC in 2013 with the desire to be a gospel-centered community on mission. The desire was to help reach more people for Jesus by beginning a new work that was willing to do things a little differently. Through the years, the church has grown into a vibrant part of the city through hosting corporate worship gatherings where good music is played and the Bible is preached, launching community groups where people are welcomed in as family, and seeking to serve our friends, neighbors and co-workers to help them see that Jesus is better than everything else.

As one of the teaching pastors at Mill City, Spencer Cary is regularly immersed in the Bible and preparing to teach. An avid lover of writing, this often channeled into words and thoughts etched into his journal. After sharing some of these ideas with Matt Freeman, the pastor who oversees worship, the two began working to help these words take shape through music. What began to emerge were new songs with a new sound, birthed out of the experience of getting to pastor Mill City Church.

Since the Fall of 2019, Mill City Church has enjoyed a prolific output of new music spanning different musical palates and biblical topics that have aided in its corporate worship. What started out as two friends writing music in their free time quickly turned into a ministry that God is using in their local church and beyond.

In 2023, a general partnership was formed by Matt Freeman and Spencer Cary called Skyview Music, and the forthcoming recording projects would be under the artist name Mill City Music. This partnership was formed in order to wisely separate out finances from Mill City Church of Cayce. This allowed for two organizations to work together to help advance the great commission. More information can be found in our LETTER tab.

Mill City Music now exists to write songs of good news for the local church.
